  19. had a very hard time translating it, since business matters are not quite
  20. my speciality, but I hope I've got everything right. The original german

  25.              Managing director of "Escom AG" forced to resign

  27.     Founder of discount-retailer for computers draws consequences from
  28.     last years high losses - Helmut Jost announced to be the successor.

  30. Berlin - After high losses of 125,000,000 DM, the managin director
  31. of the computer company located in Bochum, Manfred Schmitt, is going
  32. to leave the company by the end of the month. Yesterday, Escom announced
  33. that the board directors appointed Helmut Jost as the new Managing director
  34. from the first of April. 43 year-old Mr. Jost was already active once in
  35. Escoms board of directors from 1993 to 1995, before taking over
  36. the management of IBM's PC-business.

  38. An Escom spokesman in Heppenheim said, that Escom-Founder Schmitt had
  39. offered his position by his own wish after the huge deficit, and annouced
  40. he wants to take the full responsibility. Escom, with a turnover of 
  41. 2,350,000,000 DM, were following some ambitious goals, but went our of
  42. financial breath on them. Schmitt pushed the building up of an own
  43. retail chain in Great Brittain, for example. Though these investments seemed
  44. to be the strategically correct steps into foreign markets, they took
  45. too much capital, and didn't bring enough income. The english PC market
  46. proved itself to be just as tired as the german one nowadays. Generally,
  47. the weak demand and the enourmous drop of prices on the PC market 
  48. forced down Escom's turnover and margins. Escom-Chief Schmitt's Multimedia-
  49. Plans also proved as too high. Their potential partner RWE Telliance,
  50. a daughter of electricity provider RWE, retired from their interest
  51. because of Escom's financial situation. Banks and shareholders promised
  52. the company 100,000,000 DM of financial support (60,000,000 DM from
  53. a raise of assets), to overcome the financial bottleneck.

  55. The telephone company from Kiel by the name of "Hagenuk", which Manfred
  56. Schmitt privately bought out from the "Preussag" in Oktober, caused further
  57. Irritations among Escom's stockholders "Quelle" (25%) and "Siemens Nixdorf"
  58. (SNI, 12.5%). It was Schmitt's plan to let the company sell cellular phones
  59. via his Escom shops, about which the aforementioned two shareholders didn't
  60. agree at all.

  62. Even after his retirement to the board of shareholders, Schmitt is
  63. still currently holding 23% of Escom's assets. Escom's share price rised
  64. up to 13DM yesterday, after 12.7 DM on Tuesday.

  74. Bochumer ComputerhΣndlers Escom AG, Manfred Schmitt, zum Monatsende aus dem
  75. Unternehmen ausscheiden. Mit Wirkung zum 1. April wurde Helmut Jost vom
  76. Aufsichtsrat zum neuen Vorstandschef des Unternehmens bestellt, teilte
  77. Escom gestern mit. Der 43jΣhrige war bereits zwischen 1993 und 1995 im
  78. Escom-Vorstand tΣtig, bevor er im November 1995 die Leitung des deutschen
  79. PC-GeschΣfts der IBM ⁿbernahm.

  81.    Escom-Grⁿnder Schmitt habe nach dem hohen Fehlbetrag seine Position auf
  82. eigenen Wunsch zur Verfⁿgung gestellt und angekⁿndigt, die volle
  83. Verantwortung ⁿbernehmen zu wollen, sagte eine Escom-Sprecherin in
  84. Heppenheim. Escom hatte bei einem Umsatz von 2,35 Mrd. DM bisher ehrgeizige
  85. Ziele verfolgt, bei denen dem PC-Discounter allerdings die finanzielle
  86. Puste ausgegangen ist. So forcierte der bisherige Escom-Chef Schmitt den
  87. Aufbau einer eigenen Ladenkette in Gro▀britannien. Diese
  88. Investitionen galten zwar als strategisch richtiger Schritt in
  89. AuslandsmΣrkte, banden aber zuviel Kapital und sorgten nicht fⁿr
  90. entsprechende Einnahmen. Denn der englische PC-Markt hat sich als so mⁿde
  91. erwiesen wie zur Zeit der deutsche. Die allgemein schwache Nachfrage und
  92. der enorme Preisverfall im Markt der Personal Computer drⁿcken Umsatz und
  93. Margen bei Escom. Auch erwiesen sich die Multimedia-PlΣne von Escom-Chef
  94. Schmitt als zu hoch gegriffen. Der potentielle Partner RWE Telliance, eine
  95. Tochter des Stromversorgers RWE, zog sein Beteiligungsinteresse wegen der
  96. Finanzsituation bei Escom zurⁿck. Banken und AktionΣre haben dem
  97. Unternehmen 100 Mio. DM als Finanzspritze zugesagt (60 Mio. DM aus einer
  98. Kapitalerh÷hung), um den Engpa▀ des Discounters zu ⁿberwinden.

  101. und Siemens Nixdorf Informationssysteme (SNI, 12,5 Prozent) hat auch die
  102. Kieler Telefonfirma Hagenuk gesorgt, die Manfred Schmitt im Oktober
  103. vergangenen Jahres als Privatmann von der Preussag ⁿbernommen hatte. Das
  104. Unternehmen sollte nach dem Wunsch von Schmitt seine schnurlosen Telefone
  105. ⁿber die Escom-Filialen vertreiben. Dagegen sperrten sich die beiden
  106. Partner des bisherigen Escom-Chefs.

  108.    Schmitt zΣhlt mit einem Anteil von derzeit 23 Prozent des Aktienkapitals
  109. auch nach seinem Ausscheiden zum Kreis der Gro▀aktionΣre des
  110. Unternehmens. Die Escom-Aktie stieg gestern zur Kasse auf 13 DM nachdem der
  111. Schlu▀kurs am Dienstag 12,70 DM betragen hatte.
